A new partnership between the Urbana Park District and ClarkLindsey is introducing virtual reality (VR) workshops designed to help people better understand the lived experience of dementia. Participants use immersive technology to explore how memory loss, confusion, and sensory changes can affect daily life. The free sessions are being offered on select Wednesdays through March at ClarkLindsey in Urbana, Illinois.

What Happened

The Urbana Park District is launching a series of virtual reality workshops hosted at ClarkLindsey. These sessions use VR headsets to simulate common symptoms associated with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, such as disorientation, difficulty recalling information, and heightened anxiety.

The goal is to give participants a firsthand sense of the challenges many older adults face, helping families, caregivers, and community members build empathy and awareness. Local storyteller Erin Valle previewed the experience to offer the public an early look at how the technology works and what participants can expect.

The workshops are free to attend and take place on Wednesday afternoons through March at ClarkLindsey’s campus on Windsor Road in Urbana.

Why This Matters

Dementia affects millions of individuals and families, yet it can be difficult to grasp what the condition feels like from the inside. Tools like VR offer a way to bridge that gap by translating clinical symptoms into relatable, sensory experiences.

For caregivers, this kind of insight can support more patient, informed, and compassionate interactions. For community members, it can deepen understanding of how cognitive changes influence behavior and communication. Hosting these workshops at ClarkLindsey also reflects a broader commitment to education and community engagement around aging and cognitive health.

Broader Context

Across the country, organizations are exploring new ways to educate the public about dementia, especially as the population of older adults continues to grow. Virtual reality has emerged as a promising tool because it can convey the emotional and sensory aspects of cognitive decline in ways traditional training cannot.

By offering these workshops locally, Urbana Park District and ClarkLindsey are contributing to a larger movement toward more informed, empathetic communities—an important step as families, healthcare providers, and senior living organizations navigate the realities of aging.
