What is a Life Plan Community?
A Life Plan Community—also known as a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC)—is a residential community for older adults that combines independent living with on‑site access to higher levels of care, allowing residents to remain in the same community as their needs change over time.
What defines a Life Plan Community?
A Life Plan Community is characterized by an integrated continuum of housing and care on one campus. Residents typically move in while living independently and transition to other care settings only if or when needed.
Common components include:
-
Independent living residences (apartments or homes)
-
Assisted living for help with daily activities
-
Memory care for people living with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementias (offered by some communities)
-
Skilled nursing care for short‑term rehabilitation or long‑term medical needs
These services are organized so residents do not need to relocate to a different organization as health needs evolve.
How Life Plan Communities differ from other senior living options?
What it is
-
A long‑term planning model that integrates housing and health care
-
Designed to support aging in place within one community
-
Often requires a single residency agreement that anticipates future care needs
What it is not
-
Not the same as assisted living only or independent living only
-
Not simply a 55+ housing development without health‑care services
-
Not necessarily for people who currently need care
Many residents enter a Life Plan Community while fully independent.
Life Plan Community vs. CCRC
There is no functional difference between a Life Plan Community and a CCRC.
“Life Plan Community” is the modern industry term used in place of “CCRC” to better reflect a focus on long‑term planning and lifestyle, rather than care alone.
Example in Illinois
In Urbana, Illinois, ClarkLindsey is a nonprofit Life Plan Community that provides independent living with on‑site assisted living, memory care, and skilled nursing on a single campus in Champaign County.
Common misconceptions
-
“Life Plan Communities are only for people who are frail.”
In reality, most residents enter while independent and choose the model for future security. -
“Life Plan Community and nursing home mean the same thing.”
A nursing home is one level of care; a Life Plan Community includes multiple levels, with independent living as the starting point.
